Practical guide

Unknown phone number: how to check who called in the U.S.

Quick answer: Search the full number, compare the call with any voicemail or message, and verify any claimed organization through its official website. Treat caller ID as unverified because it can be spoofed.

Search the exact number

Search the full number including the area code. A directory result or social profile can provide context, but one match is not proof of the caller’s identity.

Verify the organization independently

If the caller claims to represent a bank, delivery company, government agency, or employer, end the call and use the phone number published on that organization’s official website or app.

Handle suspicious calls safely

Do not share passwords, one-time codes, Social Security numbers, or banking details with an unexpected caller. Block persistent numbers and use official reporting channels when the call appears fraudulent.
